The seminar for teachers in Jagodina

Within the project “We Care, We Act” the one-day seminar named “Strengthening the capacities of teachers in primary schools” was held in Jagodina, on February, the 1st 2014. The host of the seminar was primary school “Boško Ðuricic“ in Jagodina.

The project's objective is to support initiatives for strengthening inclusiveness and pluralism of the society towards persons with disabilities and their families in municipalities of Jagodina, Cuprija and Paracin, as well as in adjcent minucipalities. The implementation of this project is a part of the programme of the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) financed by the European Union. The project is supported by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy within the open call for proposal for improving status of persons with disabilities named “We Act Because We Care” and it represents co-financing of the project “We Care, We Act”. Target groups of the project are civil associations engaged in improving status and rights of persons with disabilities in municipalities of Jagodina, Cuprija and Paracin, children with disabilities and their parents, classmates of these children and their parents, teachers, pupils and students of Medical School and Faculty of Pedagogy from Jagodina, Cuprija and Paracin.

This is the 3rd seminar which was held in order to educate teachers. Since the teachers in primary schools during inclusion process often show their open dissatisfaction and incompetence when it comes to work with children with disabilities, we have carefully chosen the topics by which we have tried to cover everything which can cause difficulties to them.

By discussing themes such as: lack of information and prejudice, problems teachers encounter in their work and possible solutions, ways of communicating with children with disabilities, collecting information on children and proper use of collected information we have answered many teachers’ questions and dilemmas which, as they say, had been making their work with children more difficult.

By analyzing evaluation questionnaire which was filled in at the end of the education, we have got confirmation that the seminar was very useful for all participants. Teachers stated that the information they had got would make their further work with children easier because they would be able to apply experts’ practical guidelines and experiences. The other positive thing they stated is the possibility to exchange experiences with other teachers, their colleagues who also have children with disabilities in their classes, so they realized they are not alone. The participation at this education made it easier for teachers, as they said, to prepare themselves for lessons e.g. to prepare different activities.

Teachers still need more educations and activities such as this one, which would contribute to their professional development because at this moment they feel like being at the beginning.
