“Assessment Scale for the General Success of Beneficiary”


The assessment instrument has an aim of collecting the valid data about people with disabilities who are in the social care system, live in their biological families, or are the participants of different programs (School of Life, Life Skill’s School).

The Scale is divided into three fields: SELF-INDEPENDENCE, ADAPTIBILITY, and GROUP DYNAMICS. By assessing the users in the mentioned fields, we assess their way of functioning, also the level of their ability for living in the least restrictive environment.


If we analyze the self-independence field as a process through which the activities of mastering the life skills are extended, we have in mind number of elements that are necessary for people with mental disability to adequately respond to the requirements of substantial living and working. Basic activities assessed within this field are: personal hygiene, hygiene of the living area, setting up the table and serving the food, using of the kitchen utensils, meal preparation, washing the dishes, using and maintenance of electrical appliances, maintenance of clothing, dressing up, using the money, daily rhythm and work ability.

Adaptability is a process that is related to the ability of the person to manage everyday life. Managing is using the experiences and their combining in order to to adjust to the situation, environment and society. People with mental disability react differently to the new responsibilities and new environment, so the adaptation is also different. These persons show low ability of adaptability to new situations, and the cause for that is in their emotional reactions, significant hypersensitivity to irritations from the environment and reduced ability of transmission of the social experiences. In this field an accent is put on the assessment of: behavior of people with mental disability at public places and during visits, orientation and contact with family, neighbors and unknown people.

Group dynamics - the dynamic of living and working in a group is conditioned by many specifics, and especially depends on composition of members and their age, psychophysical and mental capacities, socialization level, adjustment to the joint living, moral qualities, cultural habits, level of the conducted activities, and the other qualities that should adorn a person. Many qualities are learned during life and family environment is the first and most important link in the chain of acquisition of skills and habits. How the individual will manage later in life in social environment depends on the acquired knowledge in growing up environment. Group dynamics is a continuous process through which the personal needs, ability of thinking, emotions, habits, skills and knowledge are getting adjusted in order with the same attributes of the people in the environment. People with mental disability have the same needs and by living in the small or big group get knowledge and skills, self-confidence, sympathy for the other, they confirm their affection for loved ones, strengthen their will, conscience, express ambition and enthusiasm in performing all activities , especially those where the success is visible. In this field the assessment of the individual is carried out through the fields: attitude of the participant to the group, the influence that the group has to the participant, motivation of the group by the participant – position within the group, also choosing the ideal group for the participant.

By now, the Assessment scale has been used in assessing 2 372 children and adults who are in different institutions for placing persons with disabilities or live in their biological families.
